Genome sequence of Streptococcus mutans UA159, a cariogenic dental pathogen.
Streptococcus mutans is the leading cause of dental caries (tooth decay) worldwide and is considered to be the most cariogenic of all of the oral streptococci. The genome of S. mutans UA159, a serotype c strain, has been completely sequenced and is composed of 2,030,936 base pairs. It contains 1,963 ORFs, 63% of which have been assigned putative functions. The genome analysis provides further i...
متن کاملOsmotic stress responses of Streptococcus mutans UA159.
The hyperosmotic stress response of Streptococcus mutans was investigated. Real-time reverse transcriptase-PCR and slot-blot analysis revealed that opuAA, opcA, Smu.2115, sodA and nox were induced after exposure to 0.4 M NaCl. Our data suggest that there is a cross-talk between osmotic and oxidative stress responses in S. mutans. Inactivation of Smu.2115, encoding a putative oxidoreductase, res...
متن کاملModulation of covR expression in Streptococcus mutans UA159.
The biofilm-forming Streptococcus mutans is a gram-positive bacterium that resides in the human oral cavity and is considered to be the primary etiological agent in the formation of dental caries. The global response regulator CovR, which lacks a cognate sensor kinase, is essential for the pathogenesis and biofilm formation of this bacterium, but it is not clear how covR expression is regulated...
متن کاملDoes Cariogenic Streptococcus mutans Play a Role in Cardiovascular Disease?
The link that exists between oral health and the entire well-being of the body is continuously becoming more emphasized. As illnesses such as cardiovascular disease become more prevalent, dentists and researchers have suggested that a link between the transfer of bacteria in the mouth into the blood stream plays a direct cause in onset of the disease in some patients. The American Dental Associ...
متن کاملDraft Genome Sequence of Oral Bacterium Streptococcus mutans JH1140
Streptococcus mutans JH1140 is an oral bacterium known to produce the bacteriocin mutacin 1140, and the strain has been genetically engineered to combat dental caries. Here, we report the 2.0-Mb draft genome of S. mutans JH1140. This genome provides new insights into the strain's superior colonization properties and its utility in replacement therapy.
